Do Children Really Need Fish Oils?
Some parents might wonder if their children really need fish oils. Can’t they get all the nutrition they require from milk, fruit, vegetables and protein?
Since our bodies can’t make omega-3 fatty acids, the answer is no: we must get them from oily fish, fish oil supplements or omega-3 foods like walnuts, flaxseeds and egg yolks. Given that most kids turn their noses up at oily fish, it’s no wonder children's fish oils have become so popular!
Omega-3s have many benefits, but their effect on children is especially noteworthy: maternal intake of DHA not only contributes to the normal brain and vision development of the foetus and breastfed infant, but to the normal visual development of infants up to 12 months of age.
In one 2012 study by the University of Oxford, daily supplements of DHA improved the reading and behaviour of underperforming kids in mainstream primary schools.
‘Our results showed that taking daily supplements of omega-3 DHA improved reading performance for the poorest readers (those in the lowest fifth of the normal range) and helped these children catch up with their peer group,’ said Dr Alex Richardson, senior research fellow at Oxford’s Centre for Evidence-Based Intervention.
A separate 2016 trial underscored the benefits of fish oils for children, particularly where reading ability was concerned. Previous studies have also underlined the benefits of omega-3 supplements for kids with conditions like dyslexia and ADHD.
